Elena 5th at Trofeo Binda

Elena Cecchini sprinted to fifth place today in an exciting finale to Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio in Italy. Cecchini won Best Italian rider for her efforts and her teammate Kasia Niewiadoma finished sixth, while Marianne Vos (CCC) withheld a fast finishing chase group to take the victory in the Women’s WorldTour race.

After several breakaways combinations the race was a barrage of attacks in the final 50km. On the last time over the Orino climb an 8-rider group went clear, with Niewiadoma there for CANYON//SRAM Racing.

The small group continued to attack each other for the remaining 9km, but came to the line together allowing Vos to take her fourth victory in this race.

The chase group that held Cecchini, caught the back of the breakaway with just 150m to go, creating an exciting finish to the 21st edition of the race.

Alena Amialiusik said after the finish, “We have had better days. I worked hard in the last three laps to try to give 100% to our leaders. When you do this, and later you cross the line, you’re really hoping to hear some nice result and happy news.”

“After the race today, we didn’t have what any of us wanted to hear. We’re all disappointed with it. It’s easy to say the nice words when you win, or podium, but sometimes you have to say the hard things and admit our disappointment.”

“I still love this race and I already dream to do it again next year with a better outcome,” added the Belarusian national champion.

After the presentation for Best Italian Rider, Cecchini commented, “I felt good today and that a podium was in reach. In the final sprint I had no space to go anywhere and that gave me fifth place. The good thing about today is that I feel very strong and I hope for more in the next races.”
