Lisa 3rd on GC and Barbara wins the sprint jersey

Lisa Brennauer today finished third on the general classification at the Healthy Ageing Tour, while teammate Barbara Guarischi won the overall sprint jersey.

Conditions were tough for the final stage, a 126km course with circuits around the German island of Borkum. Barbara Guarischi was in an early breakaway with two other riders, that was caught only in the final 3km of the stage.

“I just wanted to go into the first bike path section in a good position, and then Roxanne Knetemann attacked straight away. Christine Majerus and I followed and in what felt like about 5 seconds we had a 30 second gap!”

Guarischi was pleased to take home the sprint jersey, as well as a second place on stage 1b.

“I was close to a stage win and I took home this sprint jersey, so I’m happy with this and also it’s a good result for the team.”

Lisa Brennauer moved into third on the general classification at the start of the week with a strong effort in the opening individual time trial stage on Wednesday. Brennauer maintained her position throughout the week, including a stage win on the third stage in Stadskanaal.

Following the tour, director sportif Barry Austin said “Lisa got her result in the ITT but to keep her 3rd on the GC was a team effort. And not only did we keep her there but also got a stage win and a sprint jersey. We are busy with some important building within the team. These podiums and wins are important phases in that process and we are not done yet.”

The team now will prepare for the week of Ardennes Classics starting on Sunday 16 April.
