Elena sprints to third on stage two of Boels Ladies Tour

Elena Cecchini today sprinted to third place on stage two of the Boels Ladies Tour in Nijmegen, Netherlands. The stage was won solo by Annemiek Van Vleuten (MTS), with Eugenia Bujak (BTC) winning the bunch sprint for second place, and Cecchini just behind in third.

It was a hotly contested second stage after the opening prologue yesterday. Several different breakaways were created throughout the stage but it was Van Vleuten who managed to go clear with 20km to go.

“It was a really hard stage, which we were expecting from the profile. It was full gas from the start and there were constant changes in the peloton all through the stage. In the last lap where the selection was made, I just missed the most dangerous break but fortunately it came back, apart from the winner,” said Cecchini after the stage.

“I’m happy with my sprint. With 200m to go I was still a long way back and I did the sprint in the less favourable part. But I had some power in my legs and I could make the podium. The team did a good job to bring me into position before the final climb so that was really appreciated. We are motivated and now looking forward to tomorrow’s stage,” added Cecchini.

Stage three tomorrow is a 129km circuit around Gennep and due to start at 13:00 CEST. The race can be followed on Twitter with #UCIWWT and #BLT2018, as well as a live stream here.
