Hannah 9th in Clásica Feminas De Navarra

Hannah Barnes sprinted to ninth in today’s Clásica Feminas De Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. The race was won by Arlenis Sierra (MNX) from a three-rider breakaway, just six seconds ahead of a group of twenty riders who sprinted to the line.

Swiss national champion Elise Chabbey was instrumental in closing gaps in the final kilometres, while other teammates had worked hard earlier in the race either in attacks or controlling the peloton.

Elise explained, “The team plan was to go for our sprinters Hannah Barnes and Tiffany Cromwell today. The whole team raced well together. I crashed at the beginning of the race but I did my best and probably felt better as the race went on. Omer (Shapira) and Ella (Harris) pushed the bunch and helped cover the attacks. Mikayla (Harvey) tried too. We were all trying to be a part of the race. On the last climbs there was always a different group away so I had to chase, which was hard as no one else was helping. But the goal was to bring it back for Hannah to sprint so I gave everything for that. The result isn’t maybe the best but we raced well and we’ll keep fighting for the win.”

Hannah gave a summary of her race. “During the last thirty kilometres the top of each climb was my finish line. I knew if I wanted to do well in the finish, then I had to make it over each of the those climbs as close as I could to the front even when all of the action was going.”

“The team was working hard to put Tiffany and I into a good position and that gave me a lot of motivation. My positioning was good for most of the race. There was a lot of attacking in the final three kilometres. I probably had to do a bit too much work to close gaps in the final one kilometre and didn’t have that much left for the sprint. Compared to yesterday’s race I’m really happy with the result, the team did a great job and it’s nice to see that going into the next week of racing here in Spain,” said Hannah.
