MAIKE VAN DER DUIN SPRINTS TO SIXTH PLACE ON STAGE FOUR

Maike van der Duin sprinted to sixth place in today’s fourth stage of La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour es. With crosswinds playing havoc with the peloton, Maike and Kasia Niewiadoma were both in the front group that formed after just 26km of racing in the 142km-long stage.

Even as the groups behind the leaders came back together after some kilometres, they could not bridge the gap for the remainder of the stage. That allowed Kasia to gain valuable seconds against many GC contenders and move her into tenth in the general classification at +28 seconds. Antonia Niedermaier maintains her place as the best young rider in the overall.

RIDER REACTIONS

Maike van der Duin: “The start was really hectic. Everyone was prepared for the crosswinds. I was looking forward to the stage but you never know if you’re going to make the front group or not when there are echelons. We all talked about kilometre twenty six. We we turned the corner in the top ten, and after one minute we were a group of less than twenty riders. Kasia was there as well which was perfect as that saved her for the GC. In the end, I sprinted. I started by myself, probably too early and finished fifth in the sprint, so sixth on the stage. But overall, Kasia made some GC gains and I felt a lot better than yesterday’s stage, so we’re happy.”
