Lisa wins stage 3 and leads GC

Lisa Klein won the third stage of the Boels Ladies Tour to take the lead in the general classification. The 156.8km stage around Nijverdal in The Netherlands came down to a four-rider sprint. Klein led out the sprint, to be overtaken by Amy Pieters (DLT) and Lizzie Deignan (TFS), but was then able to come back at the two to win in a throw to the line.

“I made it over in the last small climb and when we were in four coming into the last 10km, then I was working hard to make that stay away. In the final kilometre I tried to get a gap in a corner, but the other three were able to come back. I then started the sprint first, and although Amy and Lizzie came past me, I was able to come back again. It was great to get this reward for the team!” said a delighted Lisa.

“It was a massive team effort and everyone one of us worked so hard! The team did a fantastic job and I am so pleased to be able to finish that off. I have to thank them for their work. This feeling to celebrate with my teammates after the finish line and to see how happy they are, this was the best moment!!”

Stage 4 tomorrow is 135.6km from Arnhem to Nijmegen, starting at 11:00CEST. Lisa Klein goes into the stage wearing the leader’s jersey, two seconds ahead of Lorena Wiebes and six seconds ahead of Amy Pieters on the general classification.

“First we aimed for a stage win and then the GC podium here at this tour. Now, we have achieved the stage win, so there’s two more stages to go to see how it works out for the final GC. We’re looking forward to it,” added Lisa.

The stage can be followed on Twitter with #UCIWWT and #BLT2019, and is broadcast tomorrow from 13:30CEST on PodiumTV.
