Racing new Canyon WMN CF SLX Disc bikes in California

CANYON//SRAM Racing will be one of the first teams in the women’s peloton to be using disc brakes when it races the new Canyon Ultimate WMN CF SLX Disc bike at the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Tour of California Empowered by SRAM this week.

Officially launched by Canyon on 4 May, the women-specific geometric frame equipped with disc brakes have been tested by the team in training for many weeks. The feedback has been consistently positive. The Canyon WMN CF SLX Disc with SRAM Red eTap will be ridden by Alexis Ryan and Alena Amialiusik at the four-day stage race in California starting on Thursday 11 May.

While Ryan looks forward to racing one of the biggest tours on the calendar for women and men in her home state, she also cannot wait to be the first woman to race on the Canyon Ultimate WMN CF SLX Disc bike.

“I’m bubbling with excitement! I knew I wanted to ride one when Canyon first showed it to our team in December. I’ve been waiting patiently, and it’s an honor to showcase it at such a high-profile event,” said Ryan.

Her teammate Amialiusik also looks forward to finally racing on the setup. “I’ve tried this bike now for many weeks at home in all weather conditions. It’s fast, it’s comfortable and looks amazing.”

Team manager Ronny Lauke said “I am happy that we finally can race on the WMN bikes. The riders who have had the opportunity to train on prototypes were excited about the handling and performance from the frame and the safety that the new braking system offers, especially in wet conditions.”

Several other riders from CANYON//SRAM Racing have been testing the bikes including Tiffany Cromwell. “It’s been exciting being a part of the development process of the new WMN bike by Canyon. To give feedback on what we feel we need in a women’s bike and what we like in a bike. The innovations from Canyon and SRAM are an exciting development for smaller riders, it makes the bike a lot more responsive and is great for handling. You can’t fault the disc brakes. I tested them in rain and they made a huge difference in stopping power and feeling safe on the road when it’s wet.”

The most experienced rider of the team and 2015 winner of the Amgen Tour of California, Trixi Worrack is excited about the new innovations. “I really like it! It’s the first time I feel that a race bike fits me. I’m quite short (159cm) but everything about this setup works for me. It’s the only bike I train on at home and I can’t wait to race it.”

Stage one of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race empowered by SRAM is in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday 11 May. The action can be followed with #UCIWWT and #amgentocwomen.
